Kylie Voted Top Gay Icon

The traditional female winners of gay icon awards can be narrowed down to the likes of Madonna, Judy Garland and Marilyn Monroe, for their outstanding work, life stories and glamorous adventures. However for the first time ever this years winner was Kylie, and although she certainly has had a colourful life and an amazing career, to top the usual suspects is quiet an achievement.

Joseph Galliano the editor of ‘Gay Times’ magazine who held the poll said, “While always popular with gay men, it’s still a surprise to see Kylie inching ahead of Judy Garland, who has traditionally been held to be the definitive gay icon. I think Kylie is seen as much more open and warm than Madonna.”

While once again James Dean was voted all-time male gay icon, Lily Savage creator Paul O’Grady toppled Elton John from his usual runner-up spot. ‘It’s a real surprise is to see the Silver crown fall onto O’Grady’s head.’ said Galliano.

The awards were run over a six month period, starting with open nominations in February, and a shortlist in April.
